Expect That Others Generally Mean Good

· 335 words · 2 minutes to read

This follows somewhat from last weeks entry. It is strange how often we view are our actions and right and justified; where the actions of others are wrong and unjustified. It is strange to think that the majority of people are generally trying to do what they view as right based on their view of the world and their experiences. Yet, when we talk with them we, we assume they are trying to do harm, often to us directly.

The easy place to point to for this would of course be the politics of almost any society. However, this can be seen in others places, such as if you are writing an email to someone and they did not get the key points you had intended them to. When you wrote the email you included detailed steps and data that lead up perfectly to the conclusion and when they replied they missed them all. However, if we change perspectives and look at it from the receiver point of view, they may receive hundreds of emails per day and they are trying to respond to every one, and in an effort to do this they tend to read the top of the email looking for a quick overview of the ask and failing that fallback to try and skim the email to find the key points. In both cases, neither person was bad, it was just a failure to communicate clearly. The receiver could have spent more time and reread the email, but the pressure on them is for quickness. The writer could have included the key points up front with all the supporting detail below, but the pressure on them is to build a strong case that presents well.

This is a simple example, but change email to text message or product description or many other things and the same outcome could be seen. Neither side is meaning to harm the other, they are both just trying to work with their views of the world.
